Prepare Your Plumbing for Winter

Winter is upon us. We all need to make sure that our plumbing systems are ready to handle colder temperatures. As it gets colder, your plumbing system will become even more at risk of becoming damaged. We’ve put together this short list of 4 tips to properly prepare your plumbing system for winter.

Locate Your Water Main

The very first thing you need to do is make sure you’re prepared in case a pipe bursts. If one of your pipes ever bursts, you’ll want to quickly shut off the water to minimize the damage. Knowing where your water main is can save you time and money in case an emergency arises. If you’ll be away from home for an extended period of time, consider shutting off the water while you’re away.

Insulate Your Pipes

Another thing you might want to consider doing is to insulate any/all exposed pipes. You can accomplish this by wrapping the pipes in insulation foam. This will decrease the chances of your pipes freezing and bursting during the winter. If you’re unsure about how to properly insulate your pipes, give us a call. We can come out and insulate them for you.

Fix Any Leaks

While preparing your plumbing to face the elements, it’s essential that you fix any/all leaks you currently have. Plumbing leaks are weak spots in your pipes and are often the first areas to burst due to increased pressure. If you are knowledgeable about plumbing you may be able to fix these leaks yourself. However, many homeowners find it much easier to call in the professionals.

Winterize All Outdoor Faucets

Finally, don’t forget your outdoor faucets and appliances. Make sure you disconnect and drain any hoses, faucets, etc. and store them for the winter. If you have any exposed pipes outdoors, you need to make sure those are drained as well.
